Biography explained for kids

A biography is a book or story about a real person. It tells what happened in that person's life, like when they were a child, what they worked hard at, and what they are remembered for. The author uses facts, not make-believe, to tell the story. It is like a true-life storybook!

Biography examples

Example 1 (younger grades):

Imagine a short book about a famous athlete. It might tell when the athlete was born, where they grew up, how they started playing their sport, a big problem they faced, and how they became a champion. The book is a biography because it tells the true story of that athlete's life and is written by an author who is not the athlete.

Example 2 (upper grades):

Think about a longer chapter book about a scientist. The biography might start with the scientist's childhood, describe their school years, explain how they became interested in science, and then focus on their most important discoveries. It could include quotes from letters, dates of key events, and descriptions of the time period they lived in. The author organizes the biography in time order (chronological order) so the reader can follow the scientist's life from beginning to end.

Going deeper with biographies

As students get older, biographies become a way to study both a person and their time in history. A biography often shows how a person's choices were shaped by the events, culture, and problems of their world.

Upper-grade students may compare two biographies of the same person to see how different authors choose different details, or how their opinions affect the way they tell the story. They also learn to notice text features such as timelines, sidebars, and source notes that show where the author found information.

Biographies can also be used to study themes, such as courage, perseverance, or fairness, by looking at how the person acted in important moments of their life.

Common mistakes about biographies

  • Mistake: Thinking any true story is a biography.
Correction: A biography is a true story about a real person's life, usually covering many important events over time, not just one small true event.
  • Mistake: Mixing up a biography with an autobiography.
Correction: A biography is written by someone else about a person's life, while an autobiography is written by the person about their own life.
  • Mistake: Assuming every detail in a biography is just the author's opinion.
Correction: A biography should be based on facts from reliable sources, and while the author may share opinions, the main events and information are true and can be checked.

Where kids see biographies in everyday life

Biographies show up in many places your child might notice. There are picture-book biographies in the library, short biographies on posters about leaders or inventors at school, and short life stories on museum signs or websites. Even a short "about the author" section in a book is a tiny biography that tells real facts about that writer's life.
